May 2012: Liverpool Black Atlantic conference @ International Slavery Museum

On Tuesday 29 May 2012, Postdoc Temi Odumosu attended the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool (ISM) for a conference entitled Liverpool Black Atlantic, which showcased research and local resident testimonials on both the historical and contemporary experiences of Black people in Liverpool. The discussions explored the ways in which Liverpool’s diverse Black community had significantly contributed to the history and cultural life of the city, established its own educational programmes for the empowerment of young people, and negotiated the continual challenges of social and institutional racism. Featured speakers included prominent local historian Mr Eric Lynch speaking about “My Life – My Struggle – My Passion for Social Justice”; Professor Mark Christian (Lehman College, CUNY) exploring “My Journey from Mis-Education to Mental Liberation”; Councillor Anna Rothery (Liverpool City Council) describing “A Day in the Life of Politics in Liverpool”; and Dr. Mark Ledwidge (Senior Lecturer, Canterbury Christchurch University) speaking about “Black British Youth & Society”.
